21st of October, 2021 awarding ceremony of the winners of the 1st Intercontinental Chess Championship for Prisoners among women’s teams took place at “Sheraton Grand Tbilisi Metechi Palace”.
World champions were awarded by special prizes by International Foundation of Sport, Tourism and Youth and Special Penitentiary Service of Georgia under the Ministry of Justice, as well as by Georgian Chess player, grandmaster, Nona Gaprindashvili.
Just taking you back to the nearest past, Georgian female team of inmates became world champions of online chess.
Forty-three teams from 31 countries played in the 1st Intercontinental Online Championship for Prisoners, a two-day event started on October 13, 2021 – the International Day of Education in Prisons.
The championship was a part of the “Chess for Freedom” Program.
43 teams, including 5 female teams and 3 juvenile teams comprised of four players with an unlimited number of substitutes, played in the event’s group stage.
Preparation stage of Georgian female team of inmates was fully financed by the International Foundation of Sport, Tourism and Youth.
It should be noted that under the financing of the Foundation all penitentiary institutions are equipped with necessary chess inventory.
Main aim of the Foundation is to support projects and programs in the field of sport, tourism and youth in Georgia.
